SOPHIA REPRESENTS A GENERATION OF DIY MUSIC MAKERS WHO USE TECHNOLOGY AT HOME TO PRODUCE AND RECORD MUSICAL WORKS WHILST LIVING WITH THE PRESSURES OF A FAST PACED ‘ON THE GO’ EXISTANCE, THAT BALANCES WORK LIFE, FAMILY AND STUDYING.
The SALUTE initiative reflects the dramatic changes in the way new music is written, recorded, and shared. With these evolutions in technology, not only does our music change, so do our musicians. Indie bands like Goat Girl and bedroom producers like James Blake, Ikonika, Hudson Mohawke, and lil Silva are examples of the type of stand out success that DIY Music Makers have achieved.
For today’s DIY Generation of Music Makers, all they need is a laptop, a DAW and a few bits of software, an internet connection, and some headphones to get started. Some people are just using their smartphones and tablets.
Sophia is a bit more old school, we see her sitting down at the Fender Rhodes with the inspiration to finish a couple of songs to enter into SALUTE.
Buoyed with encouragement from her friend, and with the house to herself, Sophia utilities the DIY recording equipment that she has collected over the years and learnt to use, confidently knowing that she has artistic freedom and control over her career if she’s successful.
Although advances in music technologies mean that DIY culture is alive and well, this has had a detrimental effect on Music Makers getting noticed by the record labels. The labels and publishers increasingly require Music Makers to release their own music; managed social media campaigns, made their own videos, book their own tours, settled their own merchandise, and prepared their own sets, before signing. The demand on Music Makers and artists to be ‘out-there’ already before receiving recognition and monetary support has never been greater.
The SALUTE competition and platform, is here to align with this generation of DIY UK Music Makers. SALUTE has emerged to drive forward a new opportunity for supporting emerging talent and DIY careers.
We wanted to show that for kinfolk like Sophia, SALUTE Music Makers is here to give UK musicians a unique opportunity to have control over their careers whether they are known or new to the game. The chance to take home £50k and other prizes means that Music Makers can go and be creative, produce and release two albums, go on tour, get further music equipment, and maybe even quit the day job to focus on their music career…
