Internships in the music industry can offer valuable professional experience and a chance for a ‘leg up’ for young people in a very competitive job market.
However, for some organisations, internships are a way to source cheap labour. There are countless stories in the news where young people trying to break into an industry have had to carry out entry level jobs for little or no pay, with little added value, no prospect of security, and no progression. Without private means or access to family help and money, many people are unable to take up an internship for little or no pay.
Over the years the music and entertainment industry has taken advantage of an endless stream of people willing to work for free in order to network and get through the door. In recent years we have seen a revolt of the unpaid interns as record labels were hit with lawsuits by former interns, whilst others in the UK have made positive progress and recognised the need to pay interns a London living wage.
There are some incredible success stories, such as Darcus Beese who famously starting at Island Records as a promotions department assistant/teaboy, a quarter of a century ago, before rising to President of the label 25 years later.
In 2014 UK Music and Intern Aware drew up the ‘Internship Code of Practice’ which was taken up by the bigger companies, such as Sony, Universal, and Live Nation, however, internships from smaller companies often continue not to pay interns.
Sophia is confronted with this reality in the film, then to discover from her friend Khepra, that the SALUTE competition offers an alternative way for Music Makers to produce great work and take home some cash.
SALUTE is an alternative route for Music Makers to step up and develop their careers, and we take pride in respecting the rights, challenges, and talents of Music Makers in the UK today, giving them the opportunity to build a career on their own terms.
