FOR THE DURATION OF THE COMPETITION, SALUTE WILL BE FEATURING ARTISTS WITH THE INTENTION OF INCREASING THEIR EXPOSURE AND PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR THEM TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES ABOUT TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

  • SALUTE: Hi Jessica, how did you start out making music?

I started writing music when I was 18, which is a lot later than most singer-songwriters but it wasn’t until I saw a vocal coach at the time who just simply asked me if I’d ever written a song before? So I just gave it a go and figured that I was actually ok! I’ve always been led by strong female vocalists and songwriters such as Billie Holiday, Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell but I had never taken it upon myself to actually write anything myself until then.

  • SALUTE: What influences have shaped your music?

Growing up I listened to a whole range of music, my uncle is a jazz musician which sparked a love for Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, and my parents are pure 70s rock enthusiasts so my influences have come from a whole range of music. Anything spiritual or mystical often influences my songwriting; Stevie Nicks for example has been a hugely influential person for me as she has always written songs about black magic and mysticism.

  • SALUTE: Have you faced challenges getting your music heard or working with other musicians?

Of course! Whilst social media is a fantastic platform for artists such as myself there are just so many people using it – you have to work extremely hard, be incredibly lucky and as an unsigned artist you have to absolutely commit and invest yourself along the way. For me, Facebook has been a great platform in getting your music heard.

  • SALUTE: What successes have you had along the way?

My last video was premiered on CLASH magazine which got me a great gig at Meraki Festival. BBC Introducing have been so so helpful too; my song ‘Still Cold’ was BBC Beds, Herts and Bucks track of the week late last year and they’ve been a constant support since; they’re always keen to have you back when you have new music coming out.

  • SALUTE: Where can folks find coverage of your music?

I won the first Coffee Music Project along with singer-songwriter Ben Colman as a duo for the competition, you can see coverage here in Flavour Magazine , Watford Observer, and Clash Magazine.

  • SALUTE: What are your ambitions with music and in life for this year?

I just want to keep creating, I love coming up with new ideas; new visuals, melodies, lyrics and just finding influential people to work with. After my next single ‘Like Magic’ which will be released in October, I would like to start working on my second EP with a release for next year.

  • SALUTE: What do you think of SALUTE and what SALUTE offers Music Makers?

I came across SALUTE through the UMA’s who are a hugely influential company making their way through the industry so I was immediately drawn to SALUTE when they featured them. I’ve never known a platform to offer such a fantastic prize for songwriters, not just vocalists but for artists and creatives who put everything into their craft. It’s a very special opportunity that SALUTE have given to us.
