GIVEN THE SUNBATH OUTSIDE AND THE FEEL GOOD FACTOR OF TWO WEEKS OF SUNSHINE AHEAD, IT MIGHT SEEM ODD TO SAY, BUT WE ARE IN A PERFECT STORM OF FACTORS AFFECTING A GENERATION OF YOUNG MUSIC MAKERS.

Prospects for a generation have been damaged by the 2008 financial crisis, the continued blight of austerity, and the initial impact of Brexit Britain. The result of the snap general election last Friday, has shown a significant surge in turnout of 16-45 years old voters, who delivered one of the greatest shocks in UK electoral history! For the generation that came of age during the financial crisis, it’s clear, that many of us want alternatives from the norm.

We launched SALUTE because we believe now is the time for an alternative, a time for independent Music Makers in the UK to have the opportunity to showcase their songwriting talent and a platform to launch their career on their own terms.

We meet Sophia, our lead character, on a day where she’s feeling there must be more to life, she wants to find inspiration for change, and work seems like a good place for that change to start. Sophia hasn’t had much of a chance to develop her contacts in the music industry, or the chance to get recognition and remuneration after spending her nights recording and making songs. Instead, Sophia like 99.9% of Music Makers is working full time in a job she hates to make ends meet, in this instance, for a property developer who is cashing in on London and UK real estate.

Her talents are clear to her friend Khepra, but she’s up against the real life situations that face songwriters and young people in today’s Britain. For Music Makers in the UK today, the difficulties of making money from music in the new digital economy are well documented. The future for UK Music Makers is that most will have to work a day job to survive, whilst also labouring with love to make music with little or no financial reward.

This is the context Sophia is navigating, but back at home, behind the scenes, SALUTE is about to present an opportunity that can transform her life, and the lives of Music Makers across the UK.

Keep your eyes peeled for Part 2 of Sohpia’s story!
