FOR THE DURATION OF THE COMPETITION, SALUTE WILL BE FEATURING ARTISTS WITH THE INTENTION OF INCREASING THEIR EXPOSURE AND PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR THEM TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES ABOUT TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
- SALUTE: Greetings Gaia, when did you develop an interest in music?
My love for music was nurtured by my dad. He gave me an eclectic and open-minded attitude about music that I am so thankful for today. My parents are from Haiti so we would listen to Zouk, we grew up in France so we would also listen to French music and English was my favorite subject at school so I was drawn to English and American artists.
- SALUTE: Nice, big up to dad there! We have Zouk from Mauritius on in the office thanks to our connections and family there. How do you make music with those different influences at play?
Today, I mainly compose my own songs on the piano and many of my songs could be classed as R’n’B or Pop songs but when I have the opportunity to work with different artists and I get to pick instrumentals, you’d be surprised what I usually go for! I don’t actually have a rule to pick an instrumental. I listen and I just observe how I feel. If it feels good, I start humming immediately and I know I just need to go with the flow. It doesn’t really matter if it is Jazz, Metal, Rock, R’n’B…If the instrumental resonates in me, then I’m good to go! I listen to songs individually and I see how they each feel. This is how I keep discovering new artists and new songs. It keeps my flow of inspiration open.
- SALUTE: Beautiful. What have you found challenging about developing your music?
The biggest challenge as a songwriter for me is to remain myself. To always compose from a place of Truth, from a place where the song is going to benefit me first because it would have a message for me, a reminder to live my Life fully or to let go, or to Love Life. When I compose and listen back to my songs, I always feel like I am just listening to my inner dialogue. I don’t notice all that when I am in the act of writing and composing music because it is so fast. It reveals itself after.
If it has a valuable lesson for me, if when I listen to my songs it brings me more Joy then I know my songs will be of value to others too. That is a big challenge in itself to always compose songs that are going to be of value for others. And I think when you stick to all that, success inevitably comes.
- SALUTE: What are your plans for the rest of the year with your musical work?
My ambition is to join a music publishing company that would enable me to meet, work and write with/for a lot of different artists. I love writing for other artists so that is a field where I am always looking for new opportunities to work with other singers or songwriters. I also want to develop my own musical career as a singer so eventually I want to be signed to a record label that will enable me to share my music worldwide.
- SALUTE: What do you think SALUTE offers songwriters such as yourself?
Salute really gives a great opportunity to songwriters to literally ‘get out there’! Thanks to SALUTE I myself discovered new Indie artists like Navina that I love! To keep growing as an artist, you need to be heard and for this, Salute’s help and support is invaluable. Thank you!
